A decade-and-a-half has passed since Amy Millan released a solo record. We're not sure the impetus to piece together another set of songs under her own name away from the likes of Stars or Broken Social Scene, but the beauty of "Wire Walks" is captivating proof that something here deserved to be heard.
The bare bones of "Wire Walks" would have worked in a number of melodic settings, but it's the thoughtful flourishes here that really set it apart as an inviting lead single. The unexpected ukelele (Jay McCarroll) and the thoughtful trombone (Evan Cranley) create intriguing layers around Millan's vulnerable prose exploring the ways in which we live with our "stubborn wounds" and the hopeful longing that we might be okay despite them.
Check out the lyrics to "Wire Walks" below:
How you hold on to bad news
I want to carry the sad out of you
You said that night when the day lost the light
If I’m walking on a wire
Slightly bent without an anchor
Could I come down without a fall
Catching clues of what I’m here for
Wound around that stubborn wound
Great lakes have tantrums too
I lied when I said that time would catch your head
When I’m walking on a wire
Slightly bent without an anchor
Could I come down without a fall
Catching clues of what I’m here for
Around and round that stubborn wound
The future can be the past too
You might need to lean
Into what you’ve always been
When I’m walking on a wire
Slightly bent without an anchor
Could I come down without a fall
Catching clues of what I’m here for
When I hover over fires
With embers of misunderstandings
Can I come through without the burns
Catching cues of where I’m landing
