Arkells deserve loads of credit for reaching the 20-year milestone of making music. They've built a passionate audience over the years with relentless touring and an inviting catalog, and the steady build seems to suit them. But when a band is this good at crafting arena-ready anthems, you also can't help but wonder why they've not reached true breakout status in the States even as they're properly celebrated in their native Canada.

Between Us (due April 17) might be such a moment, at least if singles like "Next Summer" are any indication. The band's music has always earned comps to The Killers, but there's a workmanlike quality that has always grounded them in a different lane. And after putting out several album of their own, descriptive reaches are no longer needed. This anthem is classic Arkells, a song destined for repeat spins and perfectly suited for live exhilaration.

Max Kerman of Arkells had this to say about the new single: “When someone new enters your life, do you ever wonder ‘What did last summer look like for this person? And for me? And what will next summer look like?’ This song is a nod to the beauty and the mystery of what might lay ahead and an appreciation of how we got to today. There’s a longing in the song, but it’s hopeful.”
