Big Harp is back, and we couldn't be happier to hear it.
After a decade away, Big Harp's newest album features a plainspoken approach in words and music, a directness and direction that stems from the band's matured status. There's a rooted beauty to be found all over Run to Blue (due March 27 via Saddle Creek), but their latest single, "I Got An Itch," is an ideal window display of everything at work for Chris Senseney and Stefanie Drootin-Senseney these days.
We've got a full interview in the works, but we didn't want to delay highlighting at least one of a new set of songs best described in terms of companionship.
Lyrics to "I Got An Itch"
Well I got an itch
To pack up the car
And go drivin’ around with you
And these old guitars
But who’s gonna pay
For the gas and the beer
And if we sing all night
Who’s gonna hear?
Well settlin’ down
Has been a beautiful thing
We got a big ol’ house
We keep it nice and clean
But sometimes I miss
That ragged child
I know we look tame
But honey could we still go wild
Play one more song with me baby
If we get any saner I’ll go crazy
Let’s get these ratty harmonies the best we can
And trade in the Subaru for a fifteen passenger van
Well I got an itch
To get on the road
Take all the things we’ve bought
And turn ‘em into sold
And if we run outta money
Before we run outta time
Baby, if you don’t care,
I don’t mind
Play one more song with me baby
If we get any saner I’ll go crazy
Let’s get these ratty harmonies the best we can
And trade in the Subaru for a fifteen passenger van
‘Cause I wanna sing
And I wanna laugh
I wanna lose all sense of time
And love just as long as we can
I wanna load the van
After the bars all close
Stop for midnight truck stop coffee
And get back on the road
Remember dragging the kids
All over hell
To any room with a stage
And a license to sell
Well it never made sense
I know we barely got paid
But maybe we were meant
To live that way
Play one more song with me baby
If we get any saner I’ll go crazy
Let’s get these ratty harmonies the best we can
And trade in the Subaru for a fifteen passenger van
