Carla J. Easton had no business making heartbreak sound this fun. "Really, Really, Really, Really Sad," her new jangly pop-rock single that's far more buoyant than its source material, is the kind of song where the ooh ooh oohs and stacked harmonies carry more weight than the heartbreak underneath them. It gives off old Tommy James vibes, which is to say it's outright catchy in the best possible way.
The song is the latest from her forthcoming album, I Think That I Might Love You (due May 8 on Ernest Jenning Record Co.), a record that marks a meaningful new chapter for the Scottish artist, known for her work with TeenCanteen and Poster Paints, centered on a significant musical shift to the guitar. The change grew out of her acclaimed documentary Since Yesterday: The Untold Story of Scotland's Girl Bands, in which women kept telling her the same story: they picked up an instrument, learned a few chords, and jumped in. She followed suit.
Recorded live at Glasgow's Chem 19 studio and produced by Howard Bilerman, "Really, Really, Really, Really Sad" somehow channels the titular sentiment into something that makes you wanna roll down the windows.
Lyrics to "Really, Really, Really, Really Sad"
Really, really ah I really, really wanna
Really, really ah I really, really wanna
Really, really ah I really, really wanna
Really, really ah I really, really wanna
Traffic keeps rolling by
And parakeets are flying high
Lights fading quickly
And foxes love secretly
But it's not worth talking through
It's not the end of something true
It's just really, really, really, really sad
Really, really, really, really sad
The coffee's getting colder
The weight is heavy on my shoulder
Seems you went and tricked me
I thought you loved me dearly
But it's not worth talking through
It's not the end of something true
It's just really, really, really, really sad
Really, really, really, really sad
Bbbaby maybe you could just appease me
Ppplay me when I'm wanting you to please me
Chchchase me in a game oh yeah you tease me
All night through Just me and you
It's just really, really, really, really sad
Really, really, really, really sad
Oh yeah I'm really, really, really, really sad
Oh yeah I'm really, really, really, really sad
