"I'm not really sure what the song is about," says Christopher Pappas (a.k.a. Elle Belle), about his new single "Treat Me Right".
We're not overly concerned with its meaning if he's not. What we're certain of is that we can't stop playing the short, compelling tune. Taken in concert with other new singles like "Figure 8" and "can i ask you a question?", it's clear that Pappas is fascinated by and anchored in popular melodic concepts while feeling completely free of convention.
It's fascinating to hear Pappas add psych textures, experiment with fresh sonic ideas, and commit to such restraint. And such invention makes us excited to hear more.
That said, Pappas is hardly a newcomer. Elle Belle has been around as a moniker for nearly a decade, and his work as a composer has been featured on numerous popular TV shows and advertisements. He's also busy with his band, The Everyday Visuals.
As for "Treat Me Right," Pappas went on to explain, "It's stream of consciousness, I'm sorta fascinated with the idea that words are made up. The words I use to describe love were inherited. Can I really ever truly tell you what's on my mind? Through words, can I place an emotion inside your head? Do you feel it like I do? Probably not exactly, and that's beautiful and confusing and exhilarating."
Lyrics to "Treat Me Right":
I’m the best thing that’s ever gonna happen to you
So you better treat me right
Tear me a new one sometimes
And blow me a kiss on your way out tonight
(There’s nobody else that’s ever on my mind)
You know, I gotta wait up
There’s nobody else that’s ever on my mind
Can I make up a word?
Cuz I really don’t think it matters
