As summer eventually fades into autumn, the soundtrack will require tweaking, which makes the announcement of a new album from Fraternal Twin all the more ideal. The band's first album in a decade, entitled Halo Fell Forever, arrives September 4, and the lead single, "Solitude," has us anxious for the days to get shorter. Here's Tom Christie on the new song:
“‘Solitude’ was a bit of a departure for me in terms of songwriting and riff writing, and a breakthrough in arranging. I started writing the song on my friend’s Fender VI and later reinterpreted it on my Jaguar in a completely different tuning. The lyrics are probably my most abstract and stream-of-consciousness, maybe exploring the process of learning to accept uncomfortable emotions like anxiety and dread. The main riff sounds almost psychedelic to me, and the whole song feels like a dream sequence that came from spending too much time alone in my room at night, ruminating and overthinking. Thankfully, I don’t experience that anymore.”
It's been 10 years since Fraternal Twin's second album, Homeworlding, was released on the heels of their 2015 debut, which likely led those interested to believe Christie had called it quits. But the haunting beauty of this new single makes us glad that wasn't the case. Watch for tour dates with Ditch in August and check out the new video here.
Lyrics to Fraternal Twin's "Solitude":
Fatal flaw
Solitude, solitude
Takes its toll
All the way
Devil down the hall
Is that right, is that right
Paid in full
For the night
Sixteen petals
On the moon, on the moon
Dewdrops come undone
With the wax and the wane
He’s not looking
For a fight, for a fight
Just the shadow box
In the candlelight
