There's an appreciable alchemy at work for Jacob Theriot, known as Jaco Jaco here, on his newest single "Charade." The light touch and funky, undeniable groove keeps Theriot's work in the clouds even as he lyrically vents of a reality that's "held me up and hung me upside down."
Theriot's not wrong. He's right to seek what's authentic in an increasingly superficial existence, but it's meaningful work to take such important reflections and share them in a way that's this inviting. After getting his start as the bassist in Sports, Theriot is following up previous solo albums like Gremlin with the sort of single that makes us excited to hear more. Fortunately, On The Levee is out July 10.
"Charade" lyrics:
Set and forget it
Reality has made its bet
Held me up and hung me upside down
I should have known that
I’m only getting older
But a number sure can lie
It’s the keeping on that really matters more
The way is through it
No use in keeping score
See I don’t wanna live like that
By debts and measures
I’m only like the weather changing
It’s the keeping on that really matters more
Tear this charade all down
Can’t fake a profit
Your number’s all made up
Nothing in this world feels real to me
Your silver locket
Rattles in my pocket
That glimmer in your eye
Keeps me coming back and wanting more
I should have known that
You’re always keeping score
See I don’t wanna live like that
Need simple pleasures
I’m like a dog that needs chasing
It’s the keeping on that really matters more
Tear this charade all down
I’m no longer trying hard to see
No longer waiting
You can try and get it through to me
A new beginning
I’m no longer trying hard to be
I’m tired of wanting more
(Isolation kills your patience
In the age of contemplation)
