It's impossible not to be drawn into the lo-fi gravitation pull of Morgan Nagler's latest song, "Heartbreak City," a new single from her forthcoming debut LP, I’ve Got Nothing to Lose, and I’m Losing It (March 13th on Little Operation Records and More). It's straightforward and succinct, with the clever wordsmithing that reveals her extensive experience as a songwriter. But what works best here is the feeling that Nagler is a friend who's pulled up a chair next to you to play something both vulnerable and meaningful.
In her own words: "Although the entire song is mostly metaphor, the meaning is painfully obvious. In the present moment, I can’t help but assign new meaning to this song as I stand with Minneapolis and every single heartbroken city right now in America as we witness and collectively experience the grief and total outrage of the shockingly inhumane, cold-blooded, fascist, racist, murderous oppression. And for every other heartbroken city experiencing war, starvation, and endless horror on this planet, my great hope is for the pendulum to swing in the exact opposite direction. And I know in my heart it is possible."
"Heartbreak City" lyrics
This chamber’s made of echoes
This house is a mirage
The pavement’s only pot holes
And the streets will get you lost
The sun is made of candle wax
And the water’s made of beer
It’s Heartbreak City over here
The bed is made of ice cubes
The pillows disappeared
The nights are made of sleepless
And the days are made of tears
I’m not scared of dying
Just living my worst fear
It’s Heartbreak City over here
Where the sidewalk ends
The bridges are in flames
I can’t begin again
Different face and different name
As I allow your memory
To haunt me through the years
It’s Heartbreak City over here
The field is made of broken dreams
The bleachers made of pity
The parking lot ain’t paradise
In Heartbreak City
The air is made of lead
And the water’s made of beer
It’s Heartbreak City over here
