We're all in on all things Pedro the Lion around here, so it's no surprise to hear new singles from his forthcoming album Santa Cruz sounding so good and hitting with the sort of head-shaking scene-setting that only David Bazan can deliver.
While we love other singles like "Spend Time" and "Modesto", there's a haunting energy to "Don't Cry Now" that's both immediate and lingering. It feels like an amalgam of Bazan's various outlets all filtered together into a wonderfully affecting three-and-a-half-minute melody.
Santa Cruz will be out on June 7 and you can pre-order (or pre-save) here. Check out the lyrics below and whet the appetite for more with "Don't Cry Now."
If I don’t cry now
The trees’ll be sick
If I don’t cry now
The rocks will insist
I'm pretending to be someone else
If I don’t cry now
My sister and I snuck through the strange church office
Past the secretary’s desk
In her eyes I saw it
By “you poor kids” my face was set in a half smile
Having learned by now that frozen cheeks
Can sell my denial If I don’t cry now
The trees’ll be sick
If I don’t cry now
The rocks will insist
I'm pretending to be someone else
If I don’t cry now
Watching the interstate go by
From the backseat window
Heart still soft
Eyes still wide
Head still on a swivel
